Short hairstyles for women became popular after the Second World War; more and more women wanted a daring ’bob’ look to show they were equal to men. In the 1980s, Princess Diana again set the short hairstyle trend in motion. Later, in the late 90s it was Katie Holmes who brought back the bob. Today, more women are sporting various cool short hairstyles as inspired by celebs. So today, let us study some easy ways to style really short or medium hair.
Pixie cut
Many Hollywood A-listers have sported the pixie style which is one of the cutest ways to do really short hair. It is low-maintenance and you need not spend too much time in the morning doing your hair. Simply comb it, add some spray or mousse and you are good to go. There are many variations in the pixie: you can go for a tapered pixie as shown below. If you have a thin, long face, then go for Emma Watson pixie.
The pixie is not boyish – it can also be really classy, ultra feminine and elegant like this one on Anne Hathaway.
We love this classy tapered balayage pixie which is edgy, choppy and ultra cool.

The Bob
The main difference between the bob and pixie cut is that the bob is shorter and may or may not be layered. Pixie is almost always layered and has wispy bangs. The close cropped layers of pixie frame your face whereas the bob always has a clear, defining line at the ends of the hair. You can angle your hair in any direction in a bob. Here are some of our favorite bobs as seen on celebrities.
You can also go for a straight bob with sideways part.

The Lob
Looking for easy ways to style medium hair? Then the Lob is perfect for you. The lob or the long bob is a wonderful, stylish and trending hairstyle which many women love. It is also known as the demi bob and is one of Hollywood’s latest hairstyles. Lob is an easy hairstyle to achieve at home whether you have short or medium length hair. It is chic and the main difference between the bob and the lob is in the length. The Lob’s length skims the shoulders making it fit to be worn in a bun or a ponytail. It is also short enough so that you do not have to spend hours under the dryer to style it. Here are some easy ways for you to achieve the lob style:
Emma Stone
One thing to remember with the lob is you can have side parting, middle parting, bangs, no bangs but never waves or curls. Always keep your ends wispy and light when using this easy hairstyle for medium length hair.
For very fine hair which has no volume and which sits flat no matter what, go for the lob like Rachel’s above. For zero maintenance, we love how Kristen Bell below has styled her medium length hair. All in all, the lob is one of the cute ways to style short to medium length hair.
Braids

Important points to note when selecting easy styles for short hair:
- Face shape– If you have a round shape, a short hairstyle will add more width to it. It is best to grow out the hair a bit and use a lob which would look much better by lengthening the face. For square face shape, go for a haircut that hides the sharpness of the jaws. A layered bob with loose beachy waves like Keira Knightley’s above works best. For oblong face shape, go for a short hairstyle with flat long layers and avoid anything that adds volume on top and further elongates the face. Heart shaped face is best suited to short hairstyles as it brings out the cheekbones. A pixie cut or some loose casual curls are also best suited for heart shaped faces.
- The texture and hair type-Fine hair women may go short provided they use some light products to add volumes. Multidirectional locks and loose curls work best for this hair type. For thin black, brittle and easy-to-break hair, go for cornrows as shown below. (Read: Easy Ways to Cornrow Hair)
- How much maintenance you are willing to put in.- Most short hairstyles are easy to achieve at home and virtually need no maintenance. However, you must spend some time at the salon each month in getting it trimmed. If your hair grows rapidly, chances are you will need a trim every 3-5 weeks to maintain the bob or lob. This should help you decide on the hairstyles for medium or short hair.
These are just some of the hairstyles for short hair to do at home.
