Cracked feet causes include aging, dehydration, stress on the feet and improper shoes or footwear. Dry winter air can also cause dry and cracked heels. Cracked heels are prone to cuts, bleeding, and pain and even susceptible to fungus. So today we will take a look at some easy ways to heal cracked feet quickly.
1. Exfoliate and moisturize
The key to healthy, soft, crack-free feet is moisturization after exfoliation. To exfoliate, use a pumice stone or loofah to gently rub the heels and toes. This will remove dead skin. You can also use a filing brush post bath to remove dead skin on the feet. After drying the feet, apply Vaseline or petroleum jelly. Cover up with socks. Leave on overnight.
2. Vaseline and lemon juice
Before hopping into bed at night, soak feet in warm water mixed with salt for 15 minutes. Scrub gently to exfoliate, then pat the feet dry. Apply a mixture of Vaseline cracked heels and juice of half a lemon. Rub well. Cover the feet with socks. Leave it on overnight. Lemon juice will also eliminate fungus, if any. Repeat this treatment nightly.
3. Apply vegetable oil
After washing your feet with hot water (soak the feet in hot water for 20 minutes and dry them completely) apply shortening or vegetable oil. Make sure you liberally smear the shortening on the cracks. Cover up with a pair of thick socks. Leave the oil on the feet overnight. Use this remedy every night for a week to get rid of dry cracked feet with cuts.
4. Banana and Avocado foot mask
This is a great natural foot crack cream mask which you can easily prepare at home. Mash together an overripe banana and avocado in a blender. Apply the mixture to the cracks. Leave on for 10 minutes before washing off. You can also mash coconut pulp and banana/avocado and rub it into the heels. Do this every day for a week to get rid of dry cracked feet.
5. Use alternate hot/cold foot bath
Alternate between hot and cold bath to improve blood circulation to the heels and reduce cracks in feet. You can take two bowls big enough to soak your feet into. Soak in the cold water first for 5 minutes. Immediately soak into hot water. Wipe dry and apply your favorite foot crack cream.
6. Always keep your feet dry
Letting your feet remain moist and wet for long periods of time makes them prone to cracked heels and fungus. So protect your feet when washing clothes etc. Take care that water does not splash on them since detergents tend to dry up skin further. Cover your feet with socks or good quality footwear. After walking on wet surfaces, wipe your heels dry.
7. Use a homemade exfoliating foot scrub with olive oil and salt
Mix ¼ cup part olive oil and a few teaspoons of salt. In the shower, apply the mixture to the heels and rub gently. This will exfoliate the corns, calluses and cracked heels. Wash off with warm water.
8. Wear proper footwear
Improper foot wear places a lot of stress on the heels and is one of the major cracked feet causes. So wear properly fitting shoes/slippers. Ladies must also avoid wearing heels every day. Occasional use of heels is acceptable.
9. Never go barefoot
At home too, avoid walking barefoot and wear soft slippers. Always choose good quality cushioning slippers. When outside, wear properly fitted shoes (preferably with clean cushioning socks). Special foot inserts can also reduce pressure on the heels and prevent cracks.
10. Mint foot bath
Once a week, soak your feet in warm water. This helps increase circulation and prevents dryness. Add a teaspoon of freshly crushed mint juice or peppermint or tea tree oil to the water. Soak tired feet for at least 10-15 minutes in this manner. Wipe dry and apply your favorite foot crack cream. Cover with socks.
11. Aspirin and lemon juice
Crush 5-6 aspirin tablets and mix them up with some lemon juice and bit of warm water. Apply the paste on hardened, dry skin and cover with plastic bag. Around the bag, wrap a hot towel. Sit still for 10 minutes. The combination of aspirin, lemon juice and heat will allow the medicinal compounds in aspirin to get absorbed into the skin. This helps soften the skin making it easier to exfoliate. Avoid this remedy if you are allergic to aspirin.
Licorice has estrogen like compounds that soften hard, dry and cracked skin on heels. To make a homemade foot crack cream, crush licorice and mix it with some petroleum jelly. Rub the mixture into the cracks. Leave it on overnight.
You can easily get rid of cracked heels with vinegar without having to resort to expensive foot spa or pedicure treatments. Here is the procedure:
- Take a fistful of rice and coarsely grind it.
- Add a few spoons of honey to the rice flour.
- Next, add a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and stir until you get a thick paste.
- Soak your feet for 20 minutes in hot water and then apply this paste.
- The vinegar in this cracked heel treatment removes dead, dry skin and rice flour gently abrades the top dead layer. Honey moisturizes the feet. You can also add a bit of almond oil or olive oil to the above paste for very deep cracks.
14. Epsom salts
Epsom salts can help moisturize and heal cracked feet. Add ¼ cup of Epsom salts to foot bath and soak away. Dry complete and moisturize the feet with oil or cream. Cover up with socks.
15. Olive or coconut oil
Both oils make excellent moisturizers. Rub the oil of your choice on the cracks after exfoliating and moisturizing. Cover with socks. Leave overnight. You can also add some essential oils like Lavender, Tea Tree or Rosemary etc to the oils and use them for moisturizing foot massage.
16. Massage with ghee
Apply pure ghee to the cracked feet to get rid of dryness. You can cover up the feet with socks and leave the ghee to moisturize your feet overnight. Repeat daily until your feet are soft and smooth.
17. Look for creams with Vitamin E or cocoa/Shea butter
These intensely hydrate dry cracked feet and create a protective barrier that prevents further loss of moisture. Scrub your feet with a brush and then apply the cream. Cover with socks and leave overnight. Repeat nightly.
18. Drink plenty of water
One of the many cracked feet causes is not drinking adequate water. Drink at least 8 glasses to replenish loss of water through respiration etc.
19. Take fish oil supplements
Cracked, dry feet often indicate lack of essential fatty acids. So take a good Omega 3 essential fatty acid supplement. Also eat plenty of cold water fish, walnuts, flaxseeds and olive oil. You need at least up to 3 grams of fish oil per day.
20. Eat a diet rich in iron, calcium and zinc
While you can always take supplements containing iron, calcium and zinc it is best to get these minerals and vitamins naturally through food. So eat oysters, seeds, nuts, cereals, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy products.
