1. Use a Coin
You read that right! Hold a penny or a coin to the roof of the mouth with the tongue or between the upper teeth and lips. Hold the coin in either position for a few minutes. This is a proven remedy to stop a nosebleed that won’t stop.
2. Apply a cold surface on the back of your neck
You can use a cold spoon or knife or an ice pack, a pair of metallic scissors or frozen vegetables on the back of the neck. This is an effective technique to stop nosebleed in a child. Also place a cold pack or cool cloth over the forehead or bridge of the nose. Another neat trick to stop nose bleed fast is to apply cold metal like door key or a pair of scissors to the chest.
3. Cold water
Dipping one’s hands in cold water is another effective remedy to stop a nosebleed.
4. Use a decongestant spray
Caution: this remedy is not for those who have hypertension. Use a decongestant spray like Afrin or Neo-Synephrine in the nostrils to stop nose bleeds. Spray each nostril for up to 4 times.
5. Use Vaseline
For people with dry skin inside the nostrils, ointments like Vaseline can help. Talk to our doctor before using this remedy to stop nose bleed permanently.
6. Use horseradish
Stuff the bloody nose with pulverized horseradish to stop nose bleeding immediately.
7. Use paper
Yes, this grandma’s remedy for bloody nose really works! Place a paper under the upper lip to stop nose bleed quickly.
8. Clear clots gently
Attempt very gently to clear away the blood clots from the nose. This remedy will stop further bleeding.
9. Press the nose down
Gently press the pinched parts of the nose against the bones of the face using your thumb and side of the index finger towards the face. By the clock, hold this position for full five minutes.
10. Stay calm
If your child has a nosebleed and is crying, assure him/her that everything is okay. Crying will worsen the bleeding.
11. Sit upright and bend forward
Bend forward slightly and pinch the nose as described in step 6 above. You can hold this position for 5-10 minutes. Do not remove the pressure to check if the bleeding has stopped. Blood takes some time to clot. Do not blow your nose as this could re-start the bleeding. Keep breathing through the mouth while the nostrils are pinched. If any blood comes into the mouth, do not swallow it-spit it out.
For the next 24 hours, take rest. Do not send your child to school. Avoid strenuous exercise. Do not lift heavy objects.
13. Do not strain during bowel movement
If you have constipation, take a stool softener. Avoid straining as this might start the nosebleed again.
14. Avoid taking blood thinners or Aspirin
If your doctor has prescribed Aspirin, talk to him/her if you suffer from frequent nose bleeds. A change in medicine may be just what you need to stop nose bleeding forever.
15. Avoid exposure to cold or dry hot air
To stop nose bleeds, stay in climate controlled environment. Avoid extreme temperature. At night, run a humidifier to keep the air moist. Avoid very hot showers or baths.
16. Treat underlying allergies/colds
If you have allergies, sinusitis or colds, treat them with medicine. Avoid blowing your nose as it can trigger nose bleed. Be careful not to cause injury to the nose. While playing sports, wear a headgear. If you happen to sneeze, open the mouth wide.
17. Treat hypertension
People with high blood pressure are often more susceptible to nose bleeds. Treat the condition with medicine or using mind body practices to stop nose bleed permanently.
18. Drink plenty of fluids
Fluids will keep the nasal airways moisturized and prevent dryness of the mucosa.
19. Avoid cigarette smoke
This is important to prevent nose bleeds.
20. Know when to see a doctor
Rarely are nosebleeds serious but if they last for weeks or occur at the back of the throat they could indicate a serious health problem. Long lasting bleeds can also lead to anemia. In elderly bedridden patients, nose bleeds in the back of the throat can cause serious issues like choking.
Use these remedies and ways to stop nose bleeds quickly.
