1. Brush Your Hair Before Washing
When you brush your hair daily, especially before washing, you remove the dirt and dandruff and also disperse the oils throughout the hair to make their removal faster.
2. Wash Often
Hair starts looking limp as the scalp secretes sebum and natural oils giving it a flatter, thinner appearance. To keep your hair and scalp healthy, make sure you wash it often. If possible, wash your hair every two days.
3. Concentrate On The Scalp When Washing
When shampooing, wet your hair completely for a minute or two. This will help the shampoo disperse throughout the head and scalp properly. Rub the shampoo in the scalp instead of rubbing it on the hair shaft which will only damage it. Use an effective scalp cleansing shampoo that can remove toxins and keep the hair follicles healthy.
4. Rinse Thoroughly
All your efforts of conditioning your hair will go to waste if you do not rinse out the shampoo completely. Rinse thoroughly for a minute using cool water and then rinse again for a minute more. Cool water is much more efficient at rinsing away oils giving your hair a thicker, fuller look.
5. Skip The Conditioner
People with fine, limp hair can skip the conditioner. However, if you do plan on using it, apply it only at the ends and not the roots which will only give it a lank appearance. Wash off after a minute.
6. Dry Carefully
Drying your air is as important as washing it when you want it to give it a thicker appearance. Thin hair is best air dried, but if you plan to blow dry, use the following tips:
- First blow wet hair with a towel. Use a drier once the hair is 40 % dry. Blow drying immediately is rather damaging to the hair.
- For added volume, use a mousse through the hair. Wrap the top layers of hair in Velcro rollers when it is 95% dry and then finish blow drying.
- You can also clip the hair in sections starting at the back of the head and the side sections. Pull each section taut with a large round brush and dry from roots to tips. Use the nozzle of the brush to lift hair from roots for volume.
- After drying, give the hair a blast of cool air to set.
- When hair is 100% dry, part it and apply hair serum or spritz some hairspray.
7. Trim Your Hair Regularly
A regular trim can actually make your hair look shinier, healthier and thicker. Hair grows 1cm each month and regular trims can prevent split hairs and an uneven or scraggly look.
8. Massage, Massage
Regular head massages boost blood circulation and help the hair follicles receive nutrients they need. So massage at least once a week with warm olive or coconut oil. Never use a massaging tool which could damage the hair. Your fingertips can do the job just as wonderfully. Massage in gentle circular motions along the side, front, back and top of the head. Regular head massages will make your scalp feel tingly, fresh and exercised and you will also feel calm and rejuvenated.
9. Know What Is In Your Hair Products
Hair care products like shampoos, gels, sprays and hair colors often contain toxins and harsh chemicals. Avoid ingredients like ammonia, SLS or sodium lauryl sulfate, formaldehyde etc that are used in hair care products. These can give rise to hair loss.
10. Eat A Healthy Diet
Eat hair friendly foods containing proteins, biotin, calcium, iron and other vitamins and minerals. Fish, beans, nuts, seeds, tofu, egg whites and fruits and vegetables are good for the hair. They can prevent hair fall and give your hair a thicker, fuller appearance.
11. Take Hair Vitamins/Mineral Supplements
Look for supplements containing amino acids, green tea extracts, rooiboos, herbs and other DHT blocking ingredients which enhance hair thickness and growth.
12. Curb Hair Fall
To prevent hair fall, eat healthy and reduce stress as far as possible. If your hair loss is hormonal or has an underlying health issue, get it treated y consulting a trichologist.
13. Use Minoxidil
Tests conducted on Minoxidil have shown that men can re-grow lost hair within 2-4 months of regular application of this drug while women can see results in just 4 months of use. This wonderful drug is offering hope to millions of people across the world.
14. Use Hair Extensions
If the above tips do not show desired results, use hair extensions. Not only can they give your hair a thicker, longer look, they can also correct a bad haircut and camouflage other hair issues like patchy hair loss, gray hair etc. Hair extensions are becoming more mainstream and it is easy to order them. Extensions made with human hair give a natural look and you can color, cut or style it in any way you like.
15. Use Instant Hair Thickening Products
Many instant hair thickening products are readily available and they are showing great results. Cerafil is one such product that can strengthen each hair fiber, block DHT which induces hair loss and also work on each individual strand to create a fuller effect.
