Tooth decay or dental cavities are caused due to damage to the tooth’s enamel. It mainly results from bacteria that feed on the sugar present in carbohydrates we consume through food. Conventional treatment for dental cavities is dental fillings. You also may need a crown or dental cap to place over the tooth so that the filling stays in place. This may take several painful and expensive sessions at a dentist. Today we will consider some easy ways to prevent tooth decay and also re-mineralize teeth to heal cavities naturally.

1. Brush and floss
The easiest way to prevent dental cavities is to brush and floss your teeth after each meal. You can also do warm salt water gargles after eating. Use a fluoride toothpaste to thoroughly clean the teeth. Rinse well. You can also use baking soda to clean teeth.
2. White oak bark/myrrh powder
This is a natural remedy to heal gums and protect the teeth from further damage. Try this natural tooth decay treatment at home.
3. Stop consuming pasteurized dairy products
Pasteurized milk is harmful to the teeth as it is rich in antibiotics and hormone supplements fed to cows. So choose raw, natural and organic milk. Raw milk is full of calcium that is higher in quality compared to that found pasteurized milk. This is good for bones and teeth and can even help reverse tooth decay in early stages.
4. Oil pulling
Oil pulling is an ancient yet effective remedy to remove cavities and plaque. It helps remove tartar buildup and toxins from the blood. Use coconut/olive/sesame oil and swish it around the mouth for 20 minutes. Spit out the oil. Do this every morning upon waking up to heal cavities.
5. Maintain blood sugar levels
Fluctuating blood sugar levels can impact the phosphorus and calcium ratio which, in turn, can impact dental enamel. The longer and more significantly altered the ratio is; the greater is the likelihood of tooth decay. Ideally the calcium to phosphorus ratio is 5:2. So it is very important to maintain blood sugar levels and you may do the following for this purpose:
- Avoid refined grains. Instead go for ancient grains like millet, buckwheat etc. You can eat sourdough bread, semolina pasta, hot rye cereals, lentils, basmati rice (aged for one year or more), sweet potatoes etc. These foods are low in phytic acid and make an excellent health staple.
- Include a protein with each meal. This will balance the blood sugar. You can eat raw, rare grass fed meat cooked in broth.
- Consume bone broth soup– it is very rich in minerals and proteins and useful for maintaining blood sugar.

6. Eat healthy fats
Like proteins, your body also needs healthy fats to improve bone density and prevent early tooth decay. Good fats are the ones found in organic fatty fish, olive oil, coconut oil, clarified butter made from certified organic grass fed cow’s milk, walnuts, seeds, etc.
7. Avoid caffeine
Too many caffeinated beverages per day decrease bone density and also cause the liver to release sugar into the blood. So do not consume more than 2 cups of coffee per day. If possible, quit caffeine completely to fix rotting teeth.
8. Take vitamin D
Deficiency in vitamin D can lead to rotting teeth apart from many other health issues. D vitamin also increases utilization of calcium and phosphorus and help block the negative effects of many grains in our diet. Soak in the early morning sun for 10 minutes a day or take a good quality supplement (60,000 IU of vitamin D per week.) Also consume D- vitamin rich foods.
9. Avoid alcohol
Alcohol contains sugar and equals in bone loss. You can drink cider or raw beers instead to prevent tooth decay naturally.
10. Chew on sugar free gum
Some lab tests have shown that sugar free gum with xylitol can reverse and heal a cavity without fillings.
11. Chew on licorice root
Licorice extracts found in Glycyrrhiza uralensis or licorice root can fight bacterium that cause dental caries. You can read the study here.
12. Drink plenty of green tea
Regular consumption of green tea or camellia sinensis can inhibit the bacterium which leads to dental caries. So drink 2-3 cups per day. This remedy is also cancer preventive owing to its antioxidant content.
13. Increase your water intake
Drinking water containing fluoride can improve oral health in multiple ways. First of all, the fluoride fights bacterium responsible for caries. Secondly, water flushes out stuck food particles from between the teeth keeping it free from food on which bacteria thrive. Thirdly, your mouth needs saliva to prevent dental cavities. By drinking 8-10 glasses of water, your mouth produces saliva at an optimum rate.
