A fever is a menace but it is also the body’s way of telling us that something is wrong with its natural mechanism. The human body uses fever to fight infections and also as a tool to enhance its natural healing ability. Here are some ways in which you can break a fever with or without chills.
1. Make sure you actually have a fever
A fever is when the body temperature is over 98.6 F. While this may be the norm, more and more doctors are of the opinion that this number is not etched in stone. This means that the body temperature during illness depends on an individual’s emotional state, age, weight, gender and also the clothing one wears. So maintain a temperature chart for a couple of day. If your temperature remains consistently over 100 F and you are feeling uncomfortable, take acetaminophen or Ibuprofen. However, if the temperature crosses 102 F and you also have headache, vomiting, cough, sore throat or other debilitating conditions, it is time you see a doctor.
2. Let it run its course
A fever in itself is not the problem-it is the symptom of a problem. Your body is fighting bacteria/viruses and hence develops fever. The quickest way to get over a fever is to stop resisting it. Get plenty of rest to allow the body to heal.
3. Stay hydrated
As the body stays hot, you get dehydrated. So drink more water to cool it down. In addition to water, here are some doctor recommended liquids for sweating out a fever:
- Watered down juices-Dilute fresh fruit and vegetable juices in 1:1 ratio. Drink these 3-4 times a day.
- Herbal teas- Many herbal teas are known to cure fever quickly. Try chamomile (which promotes rest and relaxation and helps you sleep better), Linden tea (this induces sweating to quickly break fever), yarrow (to detoxify the body), willow bark (this contains natural salicylates which are compounds found in Aspirin that help break fever quickly), and thyme (which is antibacterial).
4. Suck on ice
Suck ice cubes as it will help during sweating out a fever. This remedy is particularly beneficial if you are too nauseated to drink water. You can also freeze diluted juice and suck on it.

5. Use cool compress
A cool compress made by dipping cloth in cold water is the quickest way to break fever in a child. If you have chills, you can also use warm compress. However, you must avoid using hot compress in case of fever over 103 F. Add some essential oils like Lavender oil to the water when making the compress. The oil will help you relax and calm mind and body.
6. Take a bath
A sweat bath is the best way to fight a fever. Soak in a tub bath with warm or hot water for 15-20 minutes. This remedy will help eliminate fever through conduction. You can add a few Epsom salts or some essential oils like Lavender or peppermint oil to the bath water to relax aching muscles and stop pain.
7. Sponge it off
Signs that a fever is broken include sweating. However, in many viral infections, the fever can return within a few hours. In the mean time, you can sponge off the fever. Dip a sponge in warm water and wipe down the body. Pay special attention to groin and armpits. Wipe one section at a time. If the patient is experiencing chills, cover up the rest of the body as you wipe.
8. Dress the fever
This is common sense. If you are feeling very cold and experiencing shivers, then dress warmly. Cover up with blankets and/or sweaters. Once the fever breaks (signs include sweating) you can remove the clothing to dissipate the heat but until then, stay warm.
9. Drown it!
Most people do not feel like eating anything when suffering from fever and chills. The best thing to do in such cases is to drown the fever-drink plenty of fluids. Soups, broth, stews, toast and rice are good options. Peppermint, ginger and catnip tea are also great for breaking fever.
10. Use garlic
Garlic can cure a fever quickly by improving immunity. This herb contains all natural antibiotics along with antibacterial and antiviral properties. You can take its capsules or eat it raw or roasted. Add it to soups, salads or broths.
11. Take probiotics
Probiotics increase good bacteria and improve the body’s natural healing ability to fight off bad bacteria. Eat plenty of yogurt, miso soup, sauerkraut, kefir etc or take probiotic supplements to break a fever easy and quickly.
