1. Remove the fear and anxiety from your mind
This is an important way to prevent miscarriage. Often, couples who have gone through the trauma and pain of miscarriage fear that the same thing will happen again. It is vital to remove this fear from both your minds. Talk to each other and better yet, speak to a counselor. Also discuss your fears and anxiety pertaining to other circumstances such as your jobs, money matters etc. If possible, practice stress control techniques like deep breathing and meditation which can alleviate anxiety and help instill positive thoughts in your mind.
2. Quit smoking and drinking
Both alcohol and nicotine can increase risk of miscarriages. Pregnant women must stay away from cigarette and vehicular smoke as far as possible.
3. Take steps to improve health and lifestyle
Your doctor will recommend some healthy foods to avoid miscarriage. We will discuss these shortly. In addition, as a couple, you need to make an effort to improve your lifestyle by implementing positive changes. Incorporate an exercise and fitness regime in your daily routine. Go for a walk in the evening after work. Eat healthy and drink plenty of water. Avoid late nights and get plenty of rest. Stay away from violent movies or books. Read positive happy books and laugh a lot together.
4. Foods to avoid miscarriage
Here is a list of foods to avoid miscarriage:
- Eat at least 5 portions of fruits and vegetables of different colors. Wash all fruits and vegetables before consumption. Choose organic varieties where possible.
- Eat lean protein and eggs. Best to select USDA certified organic, grass fed varieties. Avoid raw eggs. Do not eat liver in excess.
- Avoid unpasteurized milk and milk products.
- Consume whole grains and breakfast cereals which are fortified with vitamins and minerals.
Your doctor will also recommend supplements and medicines to prevent miscarriage. Take these pregnancy vitamins as directed. Also take folic acid supplements.
5. Limit caffeine intake
Pregnant women must not take more than 200 mg of caffeine every day. This is equivalent to two mugs of coffee. Note that many other beverages contain caffeine such as tea, sports drinks, herbal teas, certain medicines and chocolates etc.
6. Be wary of medicines including herbal remedies
Many women are unaware of the power of herbal remedies. Several herbs are known to cause abortion and miscarriages in early trimester. So be very careful about the remedies you use. Speak to your doctor about any medication you may be taking. Do not use herbs which promise safe pregnancy, especially ones bought over the Internet. Also stay away from street drugs like cannabis, crack and heroin etc.
7. Protect against infections
We live in a toxic world full of bacteria, viruses and moulds which could increase risk of abortion in early trimester. If you or your partner has had multiple sex partners or suspect having a sexually transmitted disease, get it treated immediately and discuss the risk to the fetus. Avoid consuming unpasteurized milk or cheese which could give rise to infections like Listeria. If you have pet cats, avoid cleaning their litter tray without wearing gloves in order to reduce risk of toxoplasmosis.
8. Exercise in moderation
Avoid lifting heavy weights or indulging in strenuous activity. However, exercise in moderation to prevent obesity which is often a risk of miscarriages.
9. Massage therapy
Massage, yoga and meditation are ideal ways to relax and reduce stress. If you are trying to conceive or may be already pregnant, talk to your therapist/instructor as to whether these therapies are right for you.
10. Talk therapy
If you are anxious about miscarriages due to past experience, do talk to your spouse, parents, friends, physician or other supportive people about it.
A miscarriage is a traumatic experience but thanks to modern science and some self-help therapies, there is no reason why you cannot have a safe and healthy pregnancy.
