There are huge health risks involved when you have a sedentary lifestyle. Sitting at your computer all day is no fun and people who do so are at a higher risk of mortality than those who lead more active lifestyles. That said, having a sedentary job need not mean that you just keep gaining weight and do nothing about it. Here are some simple strategies and easy ways to lose weight despite sitting at the desk all day:
1. Stand At Your Desk All Day
Instead of sitting, try and stand and work. It is the simplest solution to toning your thighs and butt and while it may seem hard in the beginning, your body will soon adjust to it. You can even ditch your regular desk for a standing desk. You can even stand in installments-sit for 15 minutes, then walk around then stand for the next fifteen and so on.
Try to at least set out 30 minutes aside for exercise, daily. Doing so will help you make up for your longer sitting hours. If you have time in the morning, exercise then; pick any activity such as cycling, walking, or jogging. If you have time in the evening, dance the night away. Dancing is a wonderful way of toning the body and also improving cognitive brain function.
3. Walk Whenever Possible
Deliver a message to your colleagues instead of emailing or calling them. Get up every half an hour and move about. You can also keep a set of dumbbells to work out the arms. Keep a small glass of water at your desk and drink it. Once it is empty, walk to the water cooler to fill up. Use the stairs each time. Take frequent bathroom breaks.
4. Use Lunch Break Wisely
Walk during the break instead of lunching sitting at the desk. Hit the gym if there is one. Climb the stairs instead of taking the elevator.
5. Cut Carbs
As we grow older, our body needs more proteins than it does carbohydrates. Limit your intake of carbs (breads, pastas etc) and go for other food groups instead. Eat less of bread and more of lean meat, salads and seeds and nuts. Carry your lunch from home instead of eating out every day.
6. Drink Lots of Water
Water eliminates toxic waste and helps you stay hydrated. Thirst is often mistaken for hunger which leads to excess weight gain through binge eating. This is the easiest way to lose weight when having a desk job.
7. Change Your Portion Sizes
As stated above, the easiest way to lose weight while having a desk job is to pack your meals from home. Take small packaged meals so you can eat frequently instead of eating one or two larger meals. Avoid the all you can eat buffets which are very tempting and the worst thing for your waistline.
8. Exercise Right
Whenever you get time, exercise but it is also important to do it the right way. Add resistance training through the use of weights or use your own limbs as weights. This will help you burn fat and develop muscles.
9. Eliminate Alcohol
Alcohol is the most rapidly absorbed sugar and if you are not burning it as rapidly you will end up stashing it away as fat. Choose your beverages wisely and as stated above, it is best to drink tons of water instead of alcoholic beverages, caffeine or carbonated drinks, etc.
10. Cut Dairy
Dairy is full of antibiotics and humans do not need this food group at all. It only causes irritable bowel syndrome and full fat dairy leads to excess weight gain too. You can get all the calcium you need through other alternatives like kale, nuts and seeds, almonds, and all dark leafy vegetables.
