With old age come resentment, fear, anger and negativity. Some people just grow old disgracefully- quarreling, haranguing, nagging or criticizing constantly. However, there are many easy ways to grow old gracefully and that is what today’s article is all about…
1. Drop the idea of getting old
If you constantly think about getting old then you are going to feel old. So get over the idea- just drop it! Age is just another number and having a positive attitude towards aging is the first step to take on this journey of life.
2. Plan ahead
Planning for old age involves learning about insurance policies, maintaining legal forms and analyzing your health care options. Write down your obituary and even plan your funeral! Being prepared can help you cope with times of stress and anxiety. It will also give you confidence in your abilities should there arise a crisis. Talk to your spouse and children about important matters such as your will. This will help you help them and lift a load off their shoulders.
3. Take care of your body, mind and soul
It is important that you keep your body strong and healthy. Exercise daily as much as you are permitted to by your physician. Get annual blood tests and physical exams to ensure that everything is alright inside you. Invest time and money in your health. If you are retired, devote time to pursuing your passions and hobbies. Meditate daily to reduce anxiety and keep depression away. Most importantly: do not neglect the signals your body may be emitting. Use a hearing aid if it makes you hear properly. Your family will appreciate you for doing these important things.
4. Stay safe
A stitch in time saves nine. An essential part of aging gracefully is staying safe and preventing accidents. Avoid ladders and install safety bars all around your house and especially in the bathrooms. Walk carefully on slippery areas. Never leave the kitchen stove on. Skid-proof the entire house and especially the tub and shower areas. Throw away food/medicines that may have expired. Carry a phone with you always. Avoid driving if possible; get a taxi. Stay current with all your medications.
5. Be grateful
Be grateful that you are alive and still breathing. What a gift if your child, grandchild or friend called this morning to say hello! You have enough money to take care of your basic needs: food, clothing and shelter. You do not need anything more. Be grateful and abundance will flow!
6. Use your time well
If your health permits and you have ample time on hand, now is the time to write your story, do some gardening or travel- pretty much everything you have always wanted to but could not while the kids were growing up. Now is the time to start painting, learn a new language or even take up a new hobby altogether.
7. Be useful to people around you
This is one of most beautiful ways to age gracefully. Be as useful as you possibly can be to your immediate family members or even to those less fortunate. Volunteer to coach kids, or devote some time at a soup kitchen. Help out a friend or neighbor in need. The joy you will get from these activities is immense.
8. Stay in touch with people you care about
Call up or write to people from time to time. Learn to use technology such as a Smartphone or computer. This is a fantastic way of keeping in touch with loved ones who are far away.
9. Give away things you do not need anymore
Now is the time to give away things you do not need anymore; at least make lists of items you want your children/relatives to have after you are gone. Material possessions often add up to stress; so donate these to charity and try and live the minimalist lifestyle. Reduce clutter and see how much happier and lighter you feel.
10. Love love love!
Our only purpose in life is to love, love and love some more without expecting anything in return. When you love unconditionally, you will receive love in abundance-that is the simple Universal law. So, give your love by doing things for people, making their lives better as far as possible. When you do so, your life will definitely be a lot better and you will feel happier.
Life is a journey which each of us needs to undertake. When you love life and live it with laughter you can spread that light to those around you- and who doesn’t like being around a happy person? So keep smiling ; that is the best way to age gracefully.
