From my experience and the statistics that come from this site the average viewer uses a screen resolution of 800x600. If you like this resolution then have you tried full screen view.

In Internet explorer click menu view and scroll down to full screen. It makes quite a difference. In Netscape navigator click the view menu and scroll down to decrease font.

I have the luxury of a 17" monitor and to enable me to view a lot more on my screen I set my desktop resolution to 1024x768. This reduces the size of all of my desktop and all applications.

Go to your desktop and right click on the mouse anywhere on your desktop. Click properties and then the settings tab. There you can adjust the resolution of your screen.
