Despite the common belief that bags around the eyes result from heavy drinking, late nights or overwork, the condition is due to none of these things. Unfortunately it is hereditary, and in most cases develops in people with loose skin around their eyelids.

A cosmetic consealer stick can lighten the area under the eyes and reduce the effect. It should be applied carefully and gently smoothed into the skin. Women can hide loose skin on the upper eyelid by using one of the darker shades of eye-shadow applied across the deepest part of the lid.

People who have sinus problems or allergies can experience a slightly swollen area around the eye, but this is usually temporary.
